About Brisbane City and its Central Business District
In the southeast corner of Queensland lies the capital of the state. The greater Brisbane area extends along the coastal plain on the east of the Great Dividing Range. Whilst the eastern suburbs are along the shores of Moreton Bay.
Brisbane’s general urban area spreads the floodplains of Moreton Bay from Caboolture in the north to Logan in the south, and out to Ipswich in the south west.
Whilst just a little further north lies the tourist area of the Sunshine Coast and further south lies the tourist playground of the Gold coast
Lying in a curve of the Brisbane river. The central business district is around an easily discoverable 2.2 km2 . Central streets are named after members of the royal family. Queen Street is Brisbane’s traditional main street. Streets named after female members (Adelaide, Alice, Ann, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary) run parallel to Queen Street and Queen Street Mall (named in honour ofQueen Victoria) and at right angles to streets named after male members (Albert, Edward, George, William). The River city or Capital of Queensland has been developed along the meandering banks of the Brisbane river.
The main CBD is a dense area of high rises and other buildings, separated by parks such as The Brisbane Botanical Gardens, Roma St Parklands and Wickham Park.
The CBD has been designed in a grid pattern common to many Australian street patterns. As a general rule, the streets are named after male and female members of the house of hanover. The male being northwest-south east and include Albert, Edward, George and William. The female streets are named after Adelaide, Alice, Ann, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary and run northeast-south west
The CBD boasts all the top designers of a modern day metropolis and with over a thousand outlets and stores to discover to many it is the complete shopping dream including the State’s flagship Myer and David Jones department stores, plus international designers you won’t find anywhere else in Queensland.
With hundreds of awarded restaurants, cafes and bars in the entertaining precincts are endless. Whether you are seeking an afternoon drink after a hard days work at the office or a cool laneway bar, or something more sophisticated along the riverside – it is all there to be discovered.
Being a river city, there has been an emphasis on great designs for the local bridges that connect the business district with the southern bank of the Brisbane river. There are many bridges crossing the Brisbane river including:
The Captain Cook Bridge,
The Victoria Bridge,
The William Jolly Bridge and the
Go Between Bridge.
The Goodwill Bridge
The city on a low-lying floodplain has suffered 3 massive floods in recent years including the last being in January 2011
